Workplace wellness is growing in popularity and is fast becoming an area of competitive advantage. However, some companies are still under the impression that it’s unnecessary since employees can take care of themselves, and because they fear the cost of setting up such programs.  The reality is that workplace wellness is also beneficial to the company and not just the employees, and there are ways of setting up workplace wellness on a budget.

Let’s explore some of the trade-offs of not having workplace wellness as a priority in your organization.

Absenteeism

Imagine the amount of money, time and productivity that is lost when employees are constantly absent from work, when they take paid sick leave, and when they claim money for medical expenses. Also think of the amount of productivity lost when employees are at work but cannot work well due to sickness. Providing health benefits and workplace wellness reduces the number of times the employees are unable to work due to being unwell.

Organization Growth

A company is nothing without its workforce, and so, like any other asset, it must be safeguarded. Workplace wellness is a way through which a company can protect its human assets. Not having a proper wellness program may translate into high staff turnover, lower productivity, and inhibited organizational growth. While companies with a wellness program have been shown to have employees with higher EQ and listening skills, as well as lower attrition.

Costly Ignorance Of Mental Wellness

One of the most serious issues that workplace wellness programs address is mental health. It is becoming increasingly important for wellness programs to tackle this issue because it is often harder to identify compared to physical health problems. In one study that used the World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire, depression and anxiety ranked as some of the top workplace problems and also the costliest in terms of both direct and indirect costs. Without a wellness program, it is difficult to identify and curb mental health problems before they progress, and this is an expensive mistake on the part of the company. Setting up a workplace wellness system protects the employees and also protects the company’s interests and brand.
